It was a pleasure to watch her blog to see your progress with the technology and your connection with the text. You identified many of the key features of the text that you can apply to your classroom. I loved watching your enthusiasm for this approach to teaching and hope that you can share this information with your colleagues. The point of getting to know the students, who they are, utilizing readings of interest to them and not succumbing to stereotypes of them that often circulate around certain students such as the so-called Gothic girl is so important for classroom teachers. I appreciate the idea of challenging students by encouraging them to think deeply and have respectful dialogues on a regular basis is critical. I, too was alarmed by the comment of the student that "reading is simply going into the back of the chapter to find the answer". Again it was a pleasure to watch your blog video update and I look forward to your next video update.
I think that your point that relating our own life experiences to our teaching situations informs our teaching is a good one. I agree that dialogue is a good way to engage students, but one that has a limited shelf-life - students tire of that quickly if it is not varied.Establishing relationships with our students is definitely important!
I agree with you video response on how the author discussed with us on how to get to know your students using various tools but neglected to share information on how to teach reading.
I also liked the various teaching tools that were represented in the reading. Relating your own life experiences is key to keeping your students attention, but how do you vary that in your own teaching situation?
Your point on how the author turned around the Gothic girl is really true. Building a rapport with the students is first. Digging into their likes and cultures to provide an insight to their world, really helps with planning and approach.
I agree that we need to encourage students to be independent thinkers. Encouraging students to think independently will encourage them to seek education on their own which is our ultimate goal in education.
